Philips Universal Firmware Upgrade version FF9o/FF11h

Suitable for Philips DVDR1000, 1500, 980, 985, 880 and 890 recorders

Distributed by DVDplusRW.org (http://www.dvdplusrw.org)

This ZIP-file contains the FF9o/FF11h firmware upgrade file for Philips DVD recorders. It will install version FF9o on DVDR1000 and 1500 recorders, and FF11h on DVDR980, 985, 880 and 890 recorders.

Please pay careful attention to the upgrade procedure as described in this text, as incorrect usage may damage the recorder. DVDplusRW.org is not responsible for any unexpected results -including damage to the recorder-, and provides the upgrade files "as is".

Create upgrade CD

1. In this ZIP-archive, you will find two files: a disc image file with a .BIN extension, and a so-called cue-sheet with a .CUE extension.
2. Write the disc image to a CD-R or CD-RW using an appropriate CD writing application, preferably one that can interpret cue-sheets, such as the latest version of Ahead Nero Burning Rom (http://www.ahead.de) - just select "Burn image..." from the "File" menu and open the CUE-file. If the writing tool does not support cue-sheets, make sure to write the disc using these settings: 1 track, mode 2 sectors (2352 bytes per sector).

Upgrade recorder procedure for DVDR980, 985, 880 and 890

The complete upgrade procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.
1. Press the Open/Close button to open the tray and insert the CD-R or CD-RW you have just created. Close the tray.
2. At the display of the recorder, you will see the messages "READING" and then "DOWNLOAD". This stage will take about 15 minutes. If the recorder already contains the latest firmware, the display will show "UP TO DATE".
3. After this procedure, the tray will open automatically. The display will show "REMOVE DISC". You can now take the disc out of the tray and switch off the recorder using the Standby/On button.

Upgrade recorder procedure for DVDR1000 and 1500

If your DVDR1000/1500 recorder was not yet capable of DVD+R recording (because you or your dealer never applied the DVD+R/Feature Upgrade before), then the upgrade procedure consists of an extra stage, which will add DVD+R support.
The complete upgrade procedure consists of two (!) stages, and takes approximately 20 minutes. If your recorder already was DVD+R capable, then the procedure as described for the other models applies.
3. After this stage, the tray will open automatically, and the display will show "REMOVE DISC". However, you must NOT (!) remove the disc at this point.
4. Close the tray again using the Open/Close button. At the display of the recorder, you will see the messages "READING" and then "DOWNLOAD". This stage will take about 5 minutes.
5. After this final stage, the tray will open automatically. The display will show "REMOVE DISC". You can now take the disc out of the tray and switch off the recorder using the Standby/On button.
Caution: If the recorder display shows "DVD+R UNSUPP" then the firmware to support DVD+R recording could not be installed (the other new features do work however). Contact Philips for a free service procedure.
